Our New Porcelain Tile Garage Floor Installation
In our previous two articles, we showed you how we insulated, drywalled, primed and painted our new garage. With all those projects shelved, it was time to move on and install a nice porcelain tile garage floor. We did this last because we didn't want to mess up our new beautiful china while working with drywall, primer and paint. As you have read previously, in our two previous garages we have used epoxy, however, as you have also read, I was not very happy with it. After looking at different options, I decided to give porcelain a try, mainly because, as you might know by now, it's one of my favorite flooring options. Before starting the installation, we decided to eliminate the closet at the end of the garage. So right after framing, drywalling and painting the area, we installed the wall cabinets so we could store and keep some of our stuff off the floor while we worked on this install. Since builders don't pay too much attention to garage finishes, the floor may not be perfectly flat. In our case, I was happy with the ground level, so I didn't fill or grind areas. Greasy stains do not help with mortar adhesion, be sure to use a degreaser to clean greasy stains from your garage floor before beginning installation. Once done, the next steps are very similar to the ones I mentioned earlier:Measure and mark the center of the garage, use a chalk line if possible. Luckily, the main two divided the garage into four nearly identical areas, so my chalk lines were basically above the contraction joints. To help you, you can use a crack isolation membrane, but this is an additional preparation step and expense that you will have to incur. Lay the tiles from the center mark you got in the previous step, on the walls, using tile spacers, to make sure you have tiles that are roughly the same size of all the sides of the garage. Once we were happy with the positioning of the tiles, we went ahead and started setting them in mortar. This time, however, we used Flex Bond Crack Prevention, instead of the regular Versa Bond we've used before. It is stronger and prevents cracking from minor surface movement, a possibility in the garage, mainly due to temperature changes in our area. When we finished laying the tile on the left side of the garage, we started grouting it with Delorean Gray grout. At the driveway-to-garage transition, we used a Schluter Systems Reno ramp. Finally, we finished grouting the rest of the garage, sealed the grout twice, and in the end I touched up the "baseboard" (foundation) because it was a little dirty with the grout. INSTALLATION OF THE REST OF THE KOBALT GARAGE METAL CABINETS
As you may have noticed, for this project we did not need new cabinets. In fact, one of the reasons I bought them in the first place is because I always thought that if I ever moved, I could take them with me to the new place, and that's exactly what we have done.

Is Epoxy Flooring Cheaper Than Tile? (Pros Vs Cons)
If you need a durable material that will stand up to wear and tear, you might consider epoxy or tile. There are some specific circumstances that need to be considered, but overall epoxy flooring is more cost effective than tile. The Costs of Epoxy and Tile FlooringWhen you break it down, the cost of epoxy coating ranges from $3 to $12 per square foot and less than $1 per square foot for installation. Floor tiles cost between $3 and $5 per square foot, with higher installation costs of $5 to $10 per square foot. Although epoxy may be more expensive to install initially than tile, the upkeep, longevity, and durability make it a more cost-effective flooring solution. This flooring material gives a brilliant shine to any area, but you may see epoxy being used more in industrial settings, like warehouses and garages. Many benefits of epoxy flooring make it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways or other high traffic areas. Advantages of Epoxy
Due to its composition, epoxy has several advantages, making it a popular choice for workshops and homes. These include:
Durable and hard-wearing
Easy to clean
Sure
Customizable
Clean and polished appearance
Non-porous and seamless
Slip, shock, heat and fire resistant
Low maintenance
nature friendly
Disadvantages of Epoxy
When comparing epoxy to tile, you also need to consider the downsides. In some circumstances, epoxy will not be the best solution due to these factors:
Strong fumes during installation
It needs a long time to dry and harden completely
The installation process can be time-consuming and complicated
Comparison of epoxy and tile
When comparing epoxy and tile flooring, there are several factors to consider. In the meantime, tile is a better choice for the living room if you want to help keep your floors clean (especially if there are little ones around!). Both epoxy and tile are durable and long-lasting, but considering the purpose of your floor, you may be discouraged from using one or the other. Epoxy floors may cost more upfront than tile, but they will pay off more in the long run. You may see more tile than epoxy in homes, but it's versatile enough to be used on decks, porches, garages, and stores. Some of the many benefits of tiling include:
Air quality since they do not contain any harmful compounds
Sustainable
High resale value
Eco-friendly materials
Waterproof
Low maintenance
Various materials, including ceramic or stone
Disadvantages of tiling
Tile has some disadvantages that may make you think twice before choosing it for your floors. Some negative aspects of tiling include:
Grout between tiles can get dirty and stained quickly
Falling heavy items may create cracks or chips
Some materials expand and contract with heat
Heavy to transport for installation
Key points to remember
Choosing between epoxy flooring and tile can get confusing if you're unsure of the pros and cons of each, and why you should choose one over the other based on your situation. Ultimately, epoxy flooring is a more cost effective solution when you compare it to tile alternatives. You can expect a properly installed epoxy floor to last 10 to 20 years, depending on location and area traffic. Yes, you can add an epoxy resin coating to your existing tile.
