EDITOR'S NOTE 2: Aldi has brought back a robotic chiffonier in the spring of 2022 for $24.99. Aldi has been trying out its own version of robotic vacuum cleaners in recent years, and if the traffic to our site is any indication, you're as curious as we are. Aldi recently sold a pretty sturdy vacuum cleaner for $100, but that's not the subject of this article. In case we haven't made it clear already, let's do it now: it's not a void. Instead, it's a duster: it's designed to move around hardwood floors, laminate, and other smooth surfaces sweeping up dust, hair, and other bits that like to make a home on a smooth surface floor. As comparisons go, it looks a lot like the Vileda Virobi robotic mop, which is currently around $70 at a limited number of outlets, or the O-Cedar O-Duster, which looks identical to the Virobi and costs around $25 on a few major sites but is currently listed as out of stock. The Easy Home robotic dust collector comes with the following:

The dusting robot

20 disposable pads (one of them is pre-installed)

A wall adapter

A manual

The dust mop is covered by a 3 year warranty. The first cleaning pad comes pre-installed, but attaching the pads isn't difficult: the pad rings attach to the duster by means of a Velcro ring that lines the outer edge of the duster. Also, the manual has a form for ordering more: it's at the very end of the manual, after the Spanish section. As it moves, it also rotates on its axis, which not only makes the cleaning pad move in a circular motion, but also makes the duster look like some kind of red UFO sailing around your kitchen. The Negatives:

Aside from the obvious issue that it's not for mats, there are a few other limitations potential users should be aware of. In our house, a small metal lip separates the kitchen from the dining room, and the duster just can't handle it back and forth. This means that if the duster hits a stoop or a chute, it will fall right on it. Granted, there's an $80 difference between the two, but it's still one of those cases where you get what you pay for. UPDATE (December 18, 2018): We've owned the duster for a year now and it continues to perform much like it did when we first reviewed it. The verdict:

If you're looking for a full-featured robot vacuum, this isn't it. It doesn't support rugs or carpeting, nor is it equipped for short ledges or large drops: it'll get stuck on the former and fall on the latter. If you prefer something more comprehensive, you'll want an actual robotic vacuum cleaner. On the other hand, if you're looking for a $20 device that functions as a basic robotic dry mop, this might be for you.
