Aino and Alvar Aalto designed a cozy and intimate building (constrained in 1936) for themselves to live and work in, using simple, uncluttered materials. The history and architecture of Aalto's unique house, located in the Munkkiniemi district of Helsinki, opens up through the stories the guide has to share. The visit lasts one hour and includes both the guided tour itself and free time to enjoy the special atmosphere of the house and explore the museum shop.

The house, completed two years later, included, in addition to the family home, spaces for an architect's studio, which meant dividing the interior of the building into two. Alvar Aalto lived in the house with his second wife, Elissa Aalto, until his own death in 1976. Over a period of nearly six decades, only minor changes were made to the building: space for a servant was already separated from the lower floor terrace. in 1939 the wall of the recreation room on the upper floor terrace was moved and new glass doors were added, and the wall between the children's rooms was sometimes removed and then replaced. The management of the house was transferred to the Alvar Aalto Foundation in 1998, and the renovation of the building with an emphasis on preservation was carried out in 2001-2002 under the direction of Tapani Mustonen of Iivanainen & Mustonen Architects. A skyscraper with a floor plan like two hands placed side by side. But in the post-war period living space was needed and so a major project was started with the Neue Vahr with the addition that everyone should have a decent internal bathroom with a toilet and a kitchen.
